Deans and Leaders of Jesuit Engineering Schools (IAJES) en la conferencia fundacional que tuvo lugar en Bilbao, julio 2018

The first founding conference for IAJES occurred in Bilbao last July under the umbrella of the IAJU assembly. 20 Jesuit Engineering Schools (ES) expressed a strong will to develop communion links and collaboration to " promote awareness and a sense of urgency for an integrated economic and environmental justice through education, research and advocacy in all our schools ". (Third IAJU priority)

The second conference in Javeriana Colombia - July 2019 will receive inspiration and momentum from the four universal apostolic preferences recently discerned by the Society of Jesus.

Pre-conference in Javeriana Bogota - July 15-16

Conference in Javeriana Cali - July 17-19

For this conference, the most important thing is to deepen a mutual knowledge and create awareness of paths of collaboration that we can invent for the greatest benefit of all as well as a greater fruitfulness in our mission.

Of course we expect the presence of most of the 50 existing JES in the world. We will have the chance to benefit from the rich experience within AUSJAL and Javeriana- Colombia in the training of engineers for social change.

We choose to deal with 4 main issues as paths of potential collaboration:

UAP “CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME”

“Our centres of higher learning want to identify areas where they can make a difference

an d contribute to a change of mind and heart.”

1. In the field of Research

Every Engineering School is invited to share:

● supportive projects to strengthen expertise and labs in developing universities,

● ways to develop inter-university cursus for PhD students,

● calls for collaboration on specific research projects dealing with essential engineering issues (Energy, Food, Water, Infrastructure, Work and industries of the future…)

2. In the training of “Social Engineers” able to promote social justice

We will constitute a repository of learning situations crossing multiple domains through which students experiment inter-culturality, and equip themselves as engineers for social change.

3. In the development of frugal innovation:

We will share initiatives, training modules or projects u sing the approach of frugal innovation in two main ways:

● Humanitarian projects for low income populations. Design and implementation of humanitarian products improving lives of communities (Energy, transport, water, health, food…)

● Innovation to promote a desire for “healthy sobriety” (Laudato Si 126) within wealthy populations. Innovation for changing high consumption habits into resource efficient practices.

4. In proposals fostering the spiritual depth of the Engineers promoted by our

universities

UAP “CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME”

“Schools can make sure that new generations are made aware

and can integrate this issue with their faith.”

These proposals help students and the faculty to understand that science and religion needn't be mutually exclusive, and that they can actually reinforce each other on some key issues. They emphasize the fact that engineering is a form of human creativity, and promote this attitude among our students. Humans are "created co-creators", and should be interpreted in that light. The spiritual posture has incidences on the treatment of the nature and all living beings. We will invent ways for an appropriation of the “Laudato Si” fundamentals as for example: learn to discern with reference to a common good, take a step back regarding the technocratic paradigm, develop the contemplative attitude.

This conference is really a chance and an opportunity to develop collective responses to the vibrant call that is addressed to us through the universal apostolic prefere
